“Strengthening Safety Culture; Ambitious, Credible and Practical”

We have chosen a phase -oriented approach for our programme “Improving Safety Culture; Ambitious, Credible and Practical.” The goal, and, in our opinion, also the usefulness of this approach, is that it enables the customer to easily enrol in this process on the basis of his own requirements.

In short, AdviSafe’s approach has 5 different steps (see schedule on the next page). Each step offers the organisation the possibility to step into the next phase on the basis of a go/no go decision.

Step 1: Determining the Current Situation and Establishing Ambition

Determining the current situation in your company

The first step of the programme involves determination of the current situation in your company. We have a wide range of research methods at our disposal. Our experience with various companies has shown that a brief questionnaire, combined with interviews, observations, and document analysis is very successful. In addition to collecting company data, this method also offers a practical interpretation with clarifying examples of the current safety culture. We also offer, in a number of short workshops, the possibility of jointly determining the strengths and weaknesses of the organisation’s safety culture on strategic, tactical and operational levels, as well as discovering which ambitions you have to further improve the safety culture in your organisation.

Management Workshop Aimed at Determining Ambition, Personal Leadership and Management Involvement

AdviSafe will present the results of the baseline measurement during a workshop for management. Topics during the baseline measurement and management workshop include:

  1. Visible Leadership
  2. Risk Management
  3. Environment, Health and Wellbeing
  4. Competencies and Safety Awareness
  5. Quality Incident Investigation
  6. Guidance and Cooperation of Contractors
  7. Continuous Improvement – learning skills
  8. Communication and Commitment
  9. Maintenance Management and Management of Change
  10. Ambition Versus Current Situation

The workshop provides insight into the role that management can play, how (personal) commitment can be shown as well as enabling the determination of the organisational ambition.

Step 2: Setup of Communication and Improvement Plans

Communication

During this step, explicit focus is on visible leadership and management commitment. This means that if you want your employees to trust you, you also need to trust them. Furthermore, it is important to be transparent and to clearly communicate each step in the process. This can be achieved by creating a communication campaign. You can either integrate the campaign into the current communication and meeting infrastructure, or you can set up specific communication channels. AdviSafe can advise you on this. We have knowledge and experience to organise such campaigns.

A number of important topics to communicate during the first steps are:

  • Announcement of baseline measurement
  • Feedback of results
  • Communication of the organisation’s ambition

Communication of the plan of action

Setting up Structure and Plan of Action

With the management workshop and the set goals as a basis, the organisation will develop a concrete plan of action. We can support and facilitate this process and deliver expert input. We prefer the company to take the lead in this process. That way you show your employees that safety is priority number one. Based on experience from previous projects, AdviSafe can offer suggestions in different levels of detail.

We offer support using a concrete ‘Plan-Do-Check-Act’ approach for the improvement of the safety culture in your organisation. Our approach aligns with determining departmental and personal KPIs. If required, we can also provide support in the monitoring of suggested improvements.

Step 3: Implementation: Training, Workshops

On the basis of the baseline measurement results and the goals set for the improvement of your safety culture, you may select a number of interventions. Interventions may comprise the following elements, for example:

  1. Systematically Solving the issues identified during the baseline measurement. This shows your employees that you take their concerns seriously and act on them. Adequate communication in this phase is crucial to the process of change.
  2. Improvement of the Safety Management System’s performance in case possibilities for optimisation are identified.

Behaviour and Culture Improvements. In many organisations this is an important part of the improvement plan. The focus will be on the implementation of training and coaching methods to influence the attitude and behaviour of operational workers and supervisors. Depending on your requirements we can provide you with train-the-trainer programmes or provide full training. All training courses are tailor-made and developed in consultation with you.

Step 4: Evaluation

Progress Monitoring

During the intervention phase, we can set up a (monthly or quarterly) monitoring programme together to assess whether there are changes in your employees’ behaviour and/or attitude and to what degree. We can do random monitoring in the form of a short online questionnaire. A different possibility is to monitor your employees’ behaviour by means of observation programmes. Together with you, we will select the method that best suits your business.
